Dishwasher Not Working? Complete Troubleshooting Guide
Dishwasher Won't Start
- Check the door latch — dishwashers won't run unless the door is fully latched
- Test the door switch with a multimeter for continuity
- Check the control panel for error codes
- Verify power: test the outlet with another device
- Check the thermal fuse (located on the control board)
Dishwasher Won't Drain
The most common dishwasher complaint. Causes in order of likelihood:
- Clogged filter: Remove and clean the filter basket at the bottom of the tub
- Blocked drain hose: Disconnect and blow through it to check for clogs
- Failed drain pump: Listen for humming during drain cycle. No sound = bad pump
- High drain loop missing: The drain hose must loop up near the countertop to prevent backflow
Dishes Not Clean
- Clean the spray arms — food debris clogs the small holes
- Run hot water at the kitchen sink before starting the dishwasher
- Don't overload — water needs to reach all surfaces
- Check water temperature — should be 120°F (49°C) at the tap
- Replace old or clumped detergent
Dishwasher Leaking
| Leak Location | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Front of door | Worn door gasket | Replace gasket ($15-30) |
| Under the unit | Cracked sump or loose hose | Inspect and tighten/replace |
| During fill | Faulty water inlet valve | Replace inlet valve ($25-50) |
